Legislative Assembly of St.Petersburg Visits Mumbai

On September 21-25, 2023, a delegation of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg led by Chairman H.E. Mr Aleksander Belsky visited Mumbai at the invitation of the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the state of Maharashtra H.E. Mr Rahul Narvekar. The visit was reciprocal - in September 2022, the leadership of Maharashtra, represented by R. Narvekar, visited St. Petersburg amid the 55th anniversary of the establishment of sister city ties between Mumbai and St.Petersburg.

On September 22, the delegation visited the Legislative Assembly of Maharashtra and met with its leadership including Speaker Rahul Narvekar and his deputy Neelam Gorhe.

During the meeting, with the participation of Consul General Aleksei V. Surovtsev and diplomats of the Consulate General, the parties discussed issues of inter-parliamentary interaction between St. Petersburg and Maharashtra, as well as prospects for bilateral cooperation. A Memorandum of Understanding is being prepared for signing between the legislative assemblies of St. Petersburg and the state of Maharashtra.

At the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Mumbai, Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg Aleksander Belsky opened a photo exhibition dedicated to St.Petersburg and held a meeting with students and teachers of Mumbai universities. It was also attended by the head of the United Russia faction in the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly Mr Pavel Krupnik, the Consul General of Russia in Mumbai Mr Aleksei Surovtsev and diplomats of the Consulate General.

During his conversation with students of political science departments of leading Mumbai universities, Mr Aleksei Surovtsev spoke about the modern foreign policy, Russia’s position on key international issues, as well as the goals and objectives of the Special Military Operation.

The visit of the delegation of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg to Mumbai took place in a warm and trusting atmosphere. The parties agreed to intensify inter-parliamentary contacts.
